MERLOT

International variety traditionally grown in Bordeaux, although spread throughout the world.

PHENOLOGY
Early sprout, 5-7- days before the Tempranillo variety, although they ripen at the same time.

CLUSTERS AND BERRIES
Medium-large cluster.  Medium-sized berry.

PESTS AND DISEASES
Sensitive to drought, mildew and botrytis. Slightly sensitive to oidium.

AGRONOMIC CHARACTERISTICS
Open growing habit, requires fertile and damp soils.

OENOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Produces highly valued young wines that are aromatic and have a high alcohol content. Used largely in Bordeaux to blend with Cabernet Sauvignon, making the wines lighter.
